When new owners began refurbishing a pub on Hayling Island, Palletmove was pleased to help with a free donation of timber pallets. The boards were carefully reclaimed and used to give the bar a completely new character.
A local project worth supporting
Pubs are an important part of local life. They bring people together, provide jobs and give communities a place to meet. When we learned that these pallets could help new owners give a Hayling Island pub a fresh start, donating them felt like the right thing to do.
The landlady and landlord told us they were absolutely thrilled to have the material available for the project. Seeing what they created with it made us just as happy.
What are “Yankee pallets”?
The donated pallets measured 48 × 40 inches—approximately 1219 × 1016 mm. That is the most familiar North American pallet footprint and is commonly described in the trade as a 48 × 40-inch GMA-style pallet. Around our yard, we often call them “Yankee pallets”.
The donated pallets provided excellent-quality timber for the refurbishment. Once the best boards had been carefully selected and prepared, their strength, natural grain and individual markings made them particularly effective as indoor cladding. The finished bar retains the character of the original wood while giving it an entirely new purpose.
Pallet timber varies in species, condition and previous use, so it must always be assessed before being repurposed. For this project, suitable boards from the 48 × 40-inch American-format pallets were transformed into a distinctive feature that should remain useful for many years.
Reuse before recycling
Palletmove's first preference is always to keep a serviceable pallet in circulation. When that is not possible, we look for the next sensible use for its material. Timber that cannot be reused or repurposed is recovered through an appropriate recycling route; some is processed into fuel pellets rather than being sent to waste.
This project gave the boards a direct second life. It kept useful timber in use, helped a small local business with its refurbishment and turned an ordinary transport item into something the whole community can enjoy.
Small acts can make a visible difference
There are many creative uses for pallet timber, but seeing a finished project like this is particularly rewarding. A material that could easily have been overlooked is now a prominent part of a renewed local pub.
We cannot support every request, but where we can help responsibly, we want Palletmove to be a business that contributes to the community around us. This was a simple donation with a result everyone involved can be proud of.
